UVAF 2The Central Virginia chapter of AFCEA (Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) kicked-off its 2014 luncheons with an inaugural lunch hosted at Battelle’s facilities in the UVA Research Park on September 12. Tim Sample, Battelle’s Vice President for Special Programs and the former Staff Director of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, held an engaging discussion on “National Security in the Age of Cyber.” Nearly 30 percent of the chapter membership was in attendance including its newest corporate sponsor, the University of Virginia Foundation. Tim Rose, Chief Executive Officer at the Foundation, accepted a certificate of corporate membership and announced that the Foundation would underwrite half of the cost of each luncheon this year in order to ensure more funding goes to the chapter’s scholarship program.

The Central Virginia Chapter of AFCEA is dedicated to increasing knowledge through the exploration of issues relevant to its members in information technology, communications and electronics for the defense, homeland security and intelligence communities. Through trust and communication, AFCEA address the increased need for integration, collaboration and innovative ways to expand information and intelligence sharing. The organization invests in workforce development by providing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) scholarships and grants to Virginia students and teachers at all education levels, and by fostering and promoting the establishment of student chapters of AFCEA at institutes of higher learning.
